Take part in COVID-19 testing

Updated 06/07/2021

Postgraduate Taught students who began studies in 2021

We are offering you  regular, non-invasive weekly saliva tests for COVID-19 through the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Saliva Testing Programme.

The programme provides free, weekly asymptomatic saliva testing, and you are expected to test once a week, even if you have no symptoms at the time.

All students eligible to take part in saliva testing will have been contacted via their student email address with further details of how to take part. You can find the email in your inbox from The title of the email is "Complete your COVID-19 test registration".

Students can find out where to drop off saliva samples and where to pick up replacement testing packs in the table below.

Testing for all other students and staff

The safety of those who live in halls and those who are spending time on campus continues to be our highest priority. To ensure safety within our community, all students and staff are expected to take part in COVID-19 testing.

Staff and students are expected to have a negative test result before they take part in on-campus or in-person teaching and research.

COVID-19 saliva testing

All staff members, students staying in Southampton over the summer period and Postgraduate Researchers (PGR) are expected to take part in weekly saliva testing. When to test

Staff and students are expected to test twice weekly when using an LFD test if they are accessing any of the University campuses, shared facilities or halls of residence.

This is to ensure we maintain a COVID-secure University, helping to keep everyone safe from infection.

How to test

Each pack contains seven tests. Please follow the instructions in the testing kit.

The tests are easy to use and give results in 30 minutes.

You will need to register your result online with the NHS. There is a simple set of questions. Please note: When you are asked 'Tell us why you took this test?' you need to select ‘To go to school, college or university’. Select ‘University of Southampton’. Winchester School of Art students should also select this option.
