Aims and Objectives

Module Aims

The course is aimed at teaching the skills needed to design total synthesis of organic molecules. Both the knowledge-base of reactions which can be used, and the strategy of their employment will be covered. The development of teamwork skills is a significant aim.

Study time allocation Contact time: 12 hours (6 x 2hr sessions) Private study hours: Minimum of 4 hour preparation for each meeting (6 x 4hrs = 24) Total study time: At least 36 hours Teaching and Learning Methods Small group work. Mediated larger meetings.

Assessment Strategy

Assessment of the written solutions to synthetic problems. Assessment of quality of presentation, and ability to answer questions on it. Each student will be assessed on their one “set” presentation and 3 “synthesis solution” presentations during the course. Satisfactory attendance and performance at the meetings, and provision of satisfactory written work.
