LING6050 Developing and Reflecting on your teaching (CSC)

Module Overview

This module will cover a range of areas relating to English/Language teaching practice. It will include skills training in using online tools and resources, an introduction to the theory and practice of academic writing for publication and practical sessions in creating and delivering academic presentations and posters.

• to help students’ improve their skills in reflective practice • to support students in creating effective presentations • to support students in developing their academic writing • to introduce tools and strategies for developing skills in using digital technologies in research and teaching • to offer students the opportunity to practice skills in real-life settings (formal presentations and poster sessions)

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • The key features of successful academic presentations
  • The theory and practice of academic writing for publication
  • how to design and present academic posters
  • how digital tools can be an effective vehicle for presenting teaching and research
  • Reflective practice in language teaching
Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Select the appropriate digital technology for presenting teaching and research
  • Create and edit academic writing appropriate to target audience
  • Create visual materials to effectively convey your teaching and research which complements written material (as appropriate)
Transferable and Generic Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Communicate your teaching and research in a range of formats and registers, spoken and written, for a range of audiences
  • Identify, select and use a wide range of digital tools and visual materials to enhance your presentations
  • Critically evaluate and edit your own work and the work of your peers

Syllabus

Building on the content of the Applied Linguistics CPD modules you will develop an individual project which will explore issues relating to your own practice. This project will be presented at the end of the Continuing Professional Development for teachers of English (China) course as a short written report, oral presentation and academic poster. This module will help you to develop the skills you need to effectively reflect on and present your pratice to an audience of your peers (English teachers).

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching methods include • Oral presentation workshops (including student presentations); • Hands-on workshops in the use of digital technologies; • Discussion of principles and practice of academic writing for publication; • Group activities and exercises. Learning activities include • Reading of key texts relating to individual projects • Academic writing tasks • E-learning development tasks • Presentations; • Oral and written presentations of individual pedagogic projects • Academic poster session
