MUSI2009 Performance Tuition (Single Study)

Module Overview

Students prepare a solo programme (e.g. a piano recital) or may work with an accompanist (e.g. a pianist or harpsichordist) or a small accompanying group (e.g. a continuo ensemble, or a rhythm section).

Module Aims

Prepare you to perform proficiently as a soloist or accompanist. - Improve your technical and musical abilities on your chosen instruments. - Increase your awareness and skills of performing in various environments.

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • Technical problems and solutions on chosen instruments.
  • Individual practice techniques.
  • Ensemble practice technique (with accompanists).

  • Repertoire of chosen instruments.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Ability to apply practice techniques to new repertoire.

Subject Specific Practical Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Greater musical control of your instruments (including dynamic range, colour range, shape and structure, and phrasing).
  • Greater technical control of your instruments (facility, pitch range, flexibility, tone control, muscular coordination).
  • Greater understanding of performance in various contexts.


You will meet with your instructor individually and will be required to learn repertoire appropriate to your level and year. You will attend lunchtime concerts and engage in relevant performance projects and workshops run by visiting musicians and faculty. You will be required to perform in any performances that the faculty deems appropriate. At the end of the year you will be required to give an assessed performance for each instrument.

Special Features

This module allows students a significant amount of one-to-one tuition with an expert in their field whilst giving various performance opportunities in closed and public settings (often with involvement from professional musicians). In addition, the lunchtime concert series and various projects involving professional musicians give exposure to a variety of viewpoints, genres, and ideas in addition to those of the regular faculty. You will have the opportunity to perform in a lunchtime concert and receive informal feedback from the faculty.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching will be delivered in lessons with specialist teachers and workshop sessions run by faculty members. You will be given the opportunity to perform in classes/workshops, department performance projects (often resulting in public performance), as well as the opportunity to take part in workshops and masterclasses with visiting performers. You will also learn while listening and observing lunchtime concerts and while rehearsing with accompanists (if appropriate for your programme).
