Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching and learning is wholly online. Tutors guide you through the module; contacting you individually; delivering weekly chat sessions and running group discussions online; marking assignments and providing individual feedback. The interactive online learning content is designed in the form of structured learning activities around a particular topic (e.g. paraphrasing in academic writing) with automated feedback; these topics are used asynchronously and linked into tutor-led discussions in the forum, and chat sessions, and the weekly assignment. Learning is through the use of the interactive learning content overarched by tutor- guided discussion of the topics and application through written assignments.

Assessment

Assessment Strategy

Formative assessment: a weekly grammar and vocabulary review test which provides automated feedback to you on aspects of the week’s learning content where further review is needed as well as those where it is not. Formative assessment: a weekly academic writing or reading task which is submitted online to the tutor to be marked and returned to you with detailed feedback Both types of weekly assessment are closely linked to the learning content of that particular week of the online module and feedback is tailored so that you are referred back to particular learning items if your submission shows a need for review. This online module is a preparatory module for the corresponding (A or B) face-to-face taught Pre-sessional programme. You are expected to participate in the module discussions, use the weekly learning resources and attempt all assignments and review tests for formative purposes. At the end of the module you will receive a module completion statement outlining your progress to date. You are not required to ‘pass’ the module before proceeding on to the corresponding face to face taught pre-sessional programme.
