The Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Unit conducts all the phase 1 & 2 academically led and commercial oncology clinical trials in Southampton together with a number of commercial phase 3 trials.

The team includes 10 research nurses managed by the Cancer Resarch UK Senior Research Nurse in Southampton, Jac Samuel (j.a.samuel@soton.ac.uk).

The portfolio of studies covered involves novel therapies including vaccines, immunotherapies and unlicensed cytotoxics. Many of the studies are first in man and therefore the skill set of the research nursing team is highly specialized.

Patients are seen and treated by the highly skilled Cancer Research UK oncology research nurses in the oncology clinics and also at the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility in the General Hospital.

There are 40-50 active studies across the majority of oncology disease sites. Due to the nature of the trials the recruitment numbers involved may be small and the nursing interventions intensive.

To support the smooth process of setting up and implementing the oncology clinical trials the team also includes a data coordinator, admin assistant and 3 data managers.
