Social Statistics and DemographyPart of Economic, Social & Political Science

Who we are

Our department includes Social Statisticians and Demographers who come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, for example, Sociology, Social Policy, Geography, Public Health, and Mathematics.

Our demographers investigate a range of topics, such as fertility and family, migration, health and well-being, and volunteering. Our social statisticians develop the analytical tools that are vital in a thorough understanding of the social sciences. Our survey methodologists study the best way to collect data, especially as surveys transition to online technologies.

We work closely with policymakers and government officials, both within the UK and beyond, on key issues facing society today. Much of our work has an international perspective, as we collaborate with government and agencies around the world.

We offer an undergraduate degree, BSc Population and Geography, along with several postgraduate taught and research programmes. We also welcome those interested in studying with us at PhD level.

Our Research

We are known for the expertise and international scope of our researchers. Much of our work has global impact, aiding our partners in the development of policy worldwide.
