Parth Pandya BSc Population & Geography 2nd Year

Hi, I'm Parth Pandya and I am studying BSc Population & Geography within Demography at the University of Southampton.
I chose to come to Southampton because the staff cared about what you thought and not league tables or rankings. Demography is only offered as an undergraduate at Southampton and I wanted to be a part of a dynamic, world-leading environment.
Why did you choose to come and study at Southampton?
I chose to come to Southampton because the staff cared about what you thought and not league tables or rankings. Demography is only offered as an undergraduate at Southampton and I wanted to be a part of a dynamic, world-leading environment.
What were you anxious about before coming to Southampton?
I was anxious before coming to Southampton but I really came out of my shell because I made loads of friends on my tight-knit course, the societies I do and through social events! You’ll always find someone through halls, your course or society.
Once at Southampton, how were your fears overcome?
Talking to people and looking at their perspectives is really important as it’s the easiest way to make friends. Talking to your flatmates in halls on the first day is the best way to be comfortable especially when you all go to campus together.
What is it like studying here?
It is really good studying here. My department are world leaders in their research especially because we are the only demography department in the UK. They are passionate and inspiring. They want you to do well and always happy to chat in the corridor. The atmosphere in the department is really welcoming!
How do you rate study facilities at the University?
The facilities are really good and cater to everyone. There are busier environments, quieter ones and louder ones. There are loads of places to eat and drink on campus as well as clubs and societies and social spaces. There are lots of study spaces which cater to different things e.g. groupwork / individual.
What have been your Southampton ‘highlights’ (best experiences) so far?
My highlight will be going to South Africa in second year where we get to do our own research and do a project and presentation. It will be a good chance to be independent and use my initiative. I’ve always been inspired by other perspectives and cultures.
How has your time at Southampton helped you to grow as a person?
I have grown academically and the staff have helped me reach my best. I have improved my teamworking, confidence and communication too. I have really come out of my shell at university due to my course and societies.
What are you enjoying most about your course?
The dynamic between demography and human geography.
Do you have the opportunity to study modules outside of your core subject area?
We have the opportunity to study a lot outside my course. I did Politics modules in first year but you can choose a wide range of things. There is always something new to try like a language. They also complement my course well and it brings new perspectives.
Did you/do you stay in University accommodation?
I stayed in Archers Road Halls and it was really good because I was close to the city and to campus. With the free bus pass, you can travel all around the city. My flatmates were really nice and from across the globe which meant the atmosphere was always new and exciting.
What is the city of Southampton like to live in?
Southampton is dynamic, busy but also at a manageable pace. There is a lot of things to do – eat, drink, nightlife, historical, shopping, walking, nature. It has a bit of everything so you never get bored! It is really safe and has a vibrant culture in all parts. It is well connected to the air, train and the coach.
