Philip Cole BSc Population and Geography, 2014
MSc Social Statistics

Hi, I'm Philip Cole and I studied BSc Population and Geography within Social Sciences: Social Statistics & Demography at the University of Southampton.
I had the opportunity to complete a two week placement at the Office for National Statistics where I was able to put some of the techniques learnt on my course into practical use.
Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies in Population and Geography at the University of Southampton?
I was drawn to the University as it is one of the best in the field. With its unique combination of population sciences and human geography this course was very different to any others that I had looked at and after talking to some of the staff on an open day I knew this course suited my interests perfectly.
Q: What did you enjoy about studying Population and Geography at Southampton?
I really enjoyed the whole course but in particular the demography modules as these really captured my interest. I also welcomed the chance to study a variety of different modules, completing three Broadening Horizons modules and an archaeology module.
Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?
Alongside achieving a first class degree I have also gained valuable life skills and practical experience. Additionally I had the opportunity to complete a two week placement at the Office for National Statistics in Titchfield where I was able to put some of the techniques learnt on my course into practical use. Outside of my academic studies I have also been a member of various societies and have enjoyed playing in the University’s intramural 5-a-side football league.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
Following on from my undergraduate degree I am staying on at the university to complete the MSc Social Statistics course which will really build on the knowledge from my undergraduate degree. I believe this will be a help in seeking a professional career once I finish.
