Dr Agnese Vitali PhD

Dr Agnese Vitali is an Associate Professor of Social Statistics and Demography and the Director of the BSc programmes in Population and Geography and Quantitative Social Science. She is the principal investigator for a research project on female-breadwinner families in Europe, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.


She collaborates with the ESRC Centre for Population Change at the University of Southampton and with the Dondena Gender Initiative at Bocconi University. She is an expert on family and children at Population Europe.

Agnese holds a PhD (2012) in Statistics from Bocconi University and a European Research Certificate of Demography (2008) from the European Doctoral School of Demography (Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research and Institut National d’Etudes Démographiques).






Research interests

Agnese’s research interests include family and fertility, changing gender norms, transition to adulthood. Her current research activity covers the following areas:

- Female breadwinners in Europe
- Social media data – an opportunity for Demography?
- Space, context, and diffusion of "new" demographic behaviours

Agnese takes an interdisciplinary and comparative approach to research and she employs advanced quantitative methods, in particular multilevel modelling and spatial analysis techniques.
