Abstract

This presentation focuses on the intersection between partnership histories and the transition to motherhood in Europe and the United States. I examine two main aspects of this intersection. First, I study how partnership histories are related to childless women's probabilities to become mothers at later reproductive ages. Second, I examine the educational gradient of several partnership transitions leading to a first birth across the examined countries. Using retrospective union and fertility histories and a multi-state framework, my study provides new insights into the role of changing partnership dynamics in the transition to first birth across Europe and the United States.
