Money Matters


As a postgraduate student you will need to pay annual tuition fees to the University for your programme of study. You may be able to apply for funding to help you cover your costs.

When planning your finances, you will also need to consider other expenses such as living costs, accommodation fees and study materials. Visit the University’s postgraduate fees and funding page for more information.

Postgraduate Loans (PGL) for Master's study

Postgraduate loans are now available for UK and EU students studying a postgraduate degree and research masters programmes.

These loans are worth up to £11,222 per student.

ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership

Our PhD programmes are eligible for funding from the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership, either as standalone PhDs (+3) or coupled with a Masters in Social Research Methods (1+3). Check the South Coast Doctoral Training site to see if there are currently any scholarships available.

PIC Masters Studentships

UK candidates for MSc Demography and MSc Social Research Methods with Applied Statistics may be eligible for PIC Masters Studentship Scheme in Population Studies. For more information visit the PIC scholarship website.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships

We are seeking MSc Demography and MSc Global Health candidates for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships scheme. The scholarships are for candidates from least developed and lower middle income Commonwealth countries, for full-time Master’s study on selected courses. The scholarship covers tuition fees, living allowance, and some other costs. Applications will be ranked based on academic qualifications and potential impact of the work on the development of the candidate’s home country.

Wellcome Masters Programme Awards in Humanities and Social Science

The MSc in Global Health has been successful in obtaining prestigious Wellcome scholarships to train humanities and social science researchers from low and middle income countries in Global Health

2022-2023 Scholarships for MSc in Demography, MSc in Applied Statistics, MSc in Social Research Methods with Applied Statistics and MSc in Global Health

The Department of Social Statistics and Demography at the University of Southampton can offer up to four scholarships of £2,500 each for excellent UK (Home) students, to go towards paying the tuition fees for studying on our postgraduate programmes. To qualify, you need to have a first-class degree in relevant disciplines and strong motivation to study Demography, Applied Statistics, Social Research Methods with Applied Statistics and Global Health at the postgraduate level. To apply, please send a 500-word statement of intent and research interests and a CV to Professor Vicky Hosegood (for Global Health, or Dr Olga Maslovskaya (for all other programmes, by Friday the 8th of July 2022. Successful applicants will be notified on Monday the 18th of July 2022.
