What our students think

For our field trip we went to Ghana, and we all loved it. As a geography student you learn all about other countries but rarely have the chance to see it first-hand, this was an eye opening opportunity to do so and apply our knowledge for the tasks set on the trip.

The highlight of my time at Southampton was participating in an international exchange to the University of Western Ontario in the third year of my undergraduate degree.

I was part of the Geography Society Committee during my final year being the Pop Geog Representative, which I very much enjoyed as I was able to take part in organising events, meeting and interacting with students across several courses.

A definite highlight for me was the fieldtrip to Ghana we had in second year. We got the opportunity to study climate change in the less developed areas of the country and interact with locals to gain incredible insights into their way of life.

In second year my course went on a fieldtrip to Ghana, West Africa to learn about using data collection methods in the field in collaboration with the University of Accra which was brilliant to see our learning come to life and to experience a completely new and different culture with the local researchers.

The opportunity to visit a lower income country and see how things actually happen was fantastic.

The highlight of my time at Southampton so far has been my course field trip to Ghana in March 2016. This was an amazing experience, one which I wouldn’t have experienced if it wasn’t for coming to Southampton.

Flexibility in the course meant that contemporary global affairs – such as the EU refugee crisis, Ebola and Zika outbreaks, and the re-emergence of the Mexico City Policy – featured in many modules. This made Population and Geography both captivating and relevant.
