My academic background is in languages.  My degree was in Russian at the University of Bristol in the mid-nineties.  I was able to mix my hobby of computing to use the internet to get much more out of learning Russian, when I was not in Russia itself, by taking part in online chats in Cyrillic, streaming Russian radio and tv, and taking part in discussions in the k12.lang.russian and soc.culture.russian usenet groups whilst my fellow students were still struggling with email.

This gave me a passion for the use of the internet in education and to make it easier to use for people who were not already doing it for a hobby.  I was able to realise this passion when I took a one-year contract at the University of Southampton to pilot and rollout the Blackboard VLE.  The success of this quickly made the role permanent and since then I have been developing and managing our VLE service.

With the introduction of The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 I have spent a lot of my personal time reading all the primary legislation both UK and EU as well as the Accessibility Standards that organisations such as Universities must now follow.  I have been an active member of the accessibility community, and have presented at conferences, written for the AbilityNet website, and helped other Universities as well as UoS through a technique I developed for ensuring that use of institutional brand colour schemes is done in an accessible way.

My recent achievements have been:
