The University of Southampton

The University of Southampton is dedicated to implementing effective strategies to support and improve equality and diversity, supported by quantitative and qualitative evidence.

Monitoring is an essential part of the evidence gathering process, and culminates in the publication of our Annual Diversity Report, reflecting on our progress for the past year.

Data collection, use and publication

We use several methods to collect diversity data about our staff and students. Student data is collected at application time, via UCAS and application forms, and is also sampled annually during enrolment and in the National Student Survey. This information is valuable in ensuring that our application procedures are unbiased and open to students from all backgrounds. To this end, this information supports our Widening Participation Programme and the provisioning of facilities through Education Support.

Staff data is collected during the HR and UniWorkforce recruitment process, through HR2A forms, and can be updated any time within the Personal Details section in MyHR Dashboard. We use this data to target our diversity initiatives at key areas, to evaluate the effectiveness of our strategies and as part of the evidence gathering for EIAs. Collecting and publishing this information is also a requirement of the Public Sector Equality Duty.

All of our equality data is also returned annually to the Higher Education Statistics Authority (HESA) in a summarised form. The data they hold is used by Higher Education Institutes (including ourselves), the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), journalists and industry bodies (like the ECU) for conducting benchmarks and reporting on equality throughout the industry.

Annual Diversity Reports

The Diversity Team compile an annual report for University Council, which includes an update of the work we have done in the past year and a statistical summary of the staff and student population of the University.

Equal Pay reviews

The Univeristy's Equal Pay policy commits us to biennial reviews of our pay structures to ensure that we pay all our staff fairly and without discrimination by gender. The last Equal Pay review was conducted in 2015 and the report can be downloaded below.
