Research Excellence Framework

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is an assessment process for appraising the standard of research conducted by universities that receive funding from the UK funding bodies (HEFCE in England). The University must demonstrate that this process is fair and equitable, as it has significant impact for the University and its research staff.

See the results of the REF 2014 assessment exercise, which were announced in December 2014.

Following guidance provided by HEFCE, the University adopted a Code of Practice which governed the processes and procedures followed in preparing for the REF assessment in 2014. The processes and principles it sets out applied to all staff involved in the selection of research that was returned for the REF 2014, with the aim of helping staff to understand the process and the procedure for appeals, where applicable.

Equality Impact Assessment - Feb 2014

Following the completion of the selection process for REF 2014, the implementation of the Code of Practice was assessed through an Equality Impact Assessment. A number of key stakeholders were consulted in forming the conclusions of this document, and setting actions for the University in future research assessment exercises.
