Harassment Contacts recognised through Vice-Chancellor's Award

Our team of volunteer Harassment Contacts have been recognised for their many years of dedicated service, supporting both staff and students across the University.

This work can be challenging but highly rewarding. The role requires strong listening skills, working with people who may at the time be confused or upset. Although not able to give formal advice themselves, volunteers also need a good knowledge of the services, agencies and other options that may be appropriate for the caller's next step.

The recognition comes through a team award, presented by the Vice Chancellor at a ceremony in the Hartley Suite on 26 July.

Volunteer Jayne Calvert (Student Services) echoed the feelings of the whole team: "This has been lovely news for us all. It's a positive way to raise our profile across the University". Meanwhile Phil Taverner (NETSCC) confessed that this was his first award since getting 'best improver' in primary school!

Following a recruitment drive earlier in the summer, and an intensive training programme, the Harassment Contacts team will be expanding in readiness for the new academic year. This is one of a broad range of initiatives aiming to support wellbeing at Southampton; many other universities run similar schemes. You can find more details of the service on the Diversity website.

The Harassment Contacts team's contribution is considerable, and often under the radar. But it is crucial to resolving issues before they get to a formal stage, and giving individuals the personal support they need, often in difficult times
