University raises the rainbow flag for Southampton Pride

The University is proudly supporting Southampton Pride, taking place in the city on Sunday 28 August. It will be the first event of its kind in Southampton. To celebrate, we are flying the rainbow flag all week, joining organisations across the city in demonstrating our public commitment to LGBT+ equality.

Festivities begin on West Marlands Road (outside the Stage Door) from 11:00 on Sunday, with live music from midday and continuing through to the official after party at the Edge & Box Bar.

The Community Parade will leave the Stage Door at 15:00, heading around Guildhall Square and down Above Bar Street to the Bargate.

If you want to join us for the march, then please let us know via Eventbrite so we can keep in touch with arrangements for the day.

The University’s LGBT Staff Network welcome all colleagues, whatever their sexuality or gender identity, to join them for the parade under the University banner.

Andy Cast, Chair of the LGBT Staff Network, said:

“The spirit of equality, diversity and inclusivity runs through everything we do at the University. Our involvement with Southampton Pride reminds us of the importance of respecting each and every individual and celebrating our differences, which are vital to bring great things together.”

Jonathon St Clair-Smith, President of Union of Southampton LGBT+ Society said:

“Southampton Pride offers a fantastic opportunity for the student body and the LGBT+ Society to celebrate their identities with Pride alongside the rest of the city. We can’t wait to get involved, and hope lots of people can make it on the day to show their support and have fun!”

Sir Christopher Snowden, President and Vice-Chancellor and the University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Champion, said:

“We pride ourselves on creating an inclusive environment for all our staff and students. I hope colleagues and students will be able to join Andy and the Network on the day and we all feel proud to represent the University‘s diverse community.”
