Black History Month Guest Talk: Join Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi, Dean of Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering and other inspirational speakers as they share their views on academia, intersectionality, history, and personal identity

Published: 28 September 2016

The University of Southampton works to champion and celebrate the diversity of its staff and students. We are proud of the diversity that our black and minority ethnic staff (BME) and students bring to the university. Visible representation and celebration is essential to ensure that these voice are heard both within the university and in the wider community.

This talk will explore race whilst discussing issues relating to academia, intersectionality, history, and personal identity.

The city of Southampton are hosting a series of events throughout October to celebrate Black History Month, which all are invited to get involved in.

For the year ahead, we wish to explore equality issues beyond gender, and this project will play a key part in starting that conversation.

Sir Christopher Snowden, President and Vice-Chancellor and the University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Champion, said:

“This event is an opportunity for us to celebrate the rich diversity of our staff and students at the university. Black History Month allows us to open up a dialogue about race, culture, and diversity both in the UK and globally.”

Nyovani Madise, University’s Equality and Diversity Lead said: "I am proud to be part of the celebration commemorating the Black History Month. The University's global standing is enriched by the diversity of our staff and students."

Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi, Dean of Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering said: ‘Whilst there is general awareness of the need for racial diversity to enrich the UK HE sector, there is still much to do to realise this aim in reality. This event provides a real opportunity to reflect on the diversity of our own staff and students and to recognise the contribution this make directly to our University environment’.
