Equality, diversity and inclusion are central to the University's strategy and our aspirations to be a leading university. This calendar of events will be updated by the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team - with contributions from members across the University.

9 The stories of successful women in Physical Sciences

Join us for the FEPS Ade Lovelace Symposium to listen to stories of women that shaped some of the subjects in the new Faculty. Talk will be at general interest level, so no need to worry if you're not familiar to the topic. There will be a chance to meet with colleagues and share your own stories over lunch as well. 

We will also have a short session aimed at sharing stories in your subject area and considering how they might be incorporated into your teaching.

11 International Coming Out Day An awareness day with emphasis on coming out to family, friends and colleagues, and living life as an openly LGBT+ person; to discourage ignorance, homophobia and oppression by talking openly about one's identity.  Pulse LGBT+ Staff Network
18 Our Curriculum: Is it diverse? - Race Equality Charter inaugural event

All staff and students are invited to our inaugural Race Equality Charter event. This event forms part of our Black History Month celebrations and will explore diversity in the curriculum with a focus on race equality. All attendees will have an opportunity to hear from a panel of speakers to discuss pros and cons of various methods of institutional decolonisation in a question time format. The panel will include external guest speakers, university academics and student representatives. 

Suggestions made at the event will feed into future project initiatives and the University Equality Charters.

25 Social Impact Leader Speaker Series: At the end of the rainbow - where next?

S. Chelvan is a globally recognised legal expert on refugee and human rights claims based on sexual, or gender identity and expression. Chelvan views his role is that of a story-teller and interpreter, translating his client's narratives into the foreign language called the law, but to do so, establishing the safe space in order to be able to tell their stories

1 Breaking the silence of baby loss

Following 'Baby Loss Awareness  Week' held from 9-15 October every year, this event aims to raise awareness about the key issues and support parents and carers. 

Every day in the UK, 15 babies die before, during or shortly after birth. In this session we will hear from bereaved parents to gain an understanding of their experiences of baby loss.

An event to build a good relationship and working partnerships between different people of different faiths, beliefs and no religious beliefs

14 Inspiring children, parents and carers to read together

We welcome Anne Wan, author of imaginative children's adventure and independent publisher, to share how she encourages children to read, to inspire them as writers and to generate an excitement about books. 

All parents and carers interested in encouraging their children to discover and enjoy reading are welcome. There will also be a children's book sale, very timely for Christmas presents!

20 Fly the Flag for Transgender Awareness Week

The University with SUSU raised the trans flag on Transgender Day pf Remembrance. This was a campaign organised by Chrysalis to make a stand against transphobia and promote acceptance, diversity and inclusiveness.

21 Dementia Friendly Session

The Parents' and Carers' Network are pleased to be working with Alzheimer's Society Dementia Friendly programme. 

This is an initiative to change people's perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition. The University recently registered as a Dementia Friends organisation.

Val Down, a volunteer Dementia Friends Champion, will be holding an hour long information session to increase our understanding dementia, and to encourage us to think about what we can do to make a difference to people affected by dementia in our community. As well as being an information session there will be an opportunity to share experiences and ask questions.

5 First Aid for infants and troddlers

The Parents' and Carers Network are pleased to welcome back Sam Beaty to provide information about First Aid for infants and toddlers. 

Sam is a registered Paramedic with a number of years' experience working in the Ambulance Service. 

All staff are welcome to this session that aims to provide a brief look at recognising and dealing with a sick child, including some common childhood ailments and accidents, you will also have the opportunity to try some hands on resuscitation!

16 Jingle Bell Jazz Family Concert

Following on from the fantastic Easter Bunny Hop in Spring, join us for a jazz filled Christmas special, Jingle Bell Jazz! 

ABC Concerts will get you into the festive spirits with all your favourite Christmas melodies played by the Jingle Bell Jazz Band. You will dance, wriggle, clap, cheer and sing your way through this interactive and fun concert for the whole family! 

Suitable for age 2-5: all ages welcome.

In support of 'Children's Mental Health Week' and to highlight the importance of children's mental health, we welcome Lorraine Lee who will be providing one of her educational, inspiring and thought provoking talks. 

Lorraine has a background in child development and child psychology and is a Professional Parenting Practitioner. She worked with parents, teachers and children for over 16 years.

14 Lunar New Year Event by the Shine BAME Staff Network to celebrate Lunar New Year Shine BAME Staff Network
17 Lantern Festival Parade Come celebrate Chinese New Year with some dragon dancing, lion dancing, build your own lantern, tai chi, Chinese dance and meet Mr Panda and Hello Kitty. Activities start from 3pm on Guildhall Square, including lantern walking parade (with LED lights) starting at 5pm from the Gallery. All welcomed. 23 Annual Stonewall Lecture This is event is part of the annual series of lectures organised by the School of Humanities. In this lively lecture Professor Bruce R. International Women's Day

International Women's Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. They day also marks a call to action to accelerate gender equality. 

SUSU will be having a representation from UK Parliament to deliver a 2 hour workshop on women, parliament, and empowering women to use their voice. This will be held from 12-2 in the SUSU Boardroom.

Annual Campbell Lecture The Campbell Lecture represents a key part of our visibility project to showcase the high quality of women scientists both internationally and at Southampton at all stages of their careers. It is names in honour of Ishbell Campbell (1906-1997) who was one of the founding academics of the University of Southampton, a reader in Chemistry as well as a committed teacher and inspiration for women in science.
