International Women's Day is celebrated every year on 8 March. Thousands of events are held throughout the world both to inspire women and celebrate achievements. The University of Southampton is pleased to again host a week-long programme of activities to mark this special event.
All IWW events are open to both students and staff at the University, to women and men equally, and are free of charge unless stated otherwise.
Please let us know what you have planned in or around this week. We'll advertise it on this page, and link to your own news items, social media and/or booking page as well. (There's also a SharePoint group specifically for IWW contributors.)
Some organisers had found it useful to follow a theme in previous years. Rather than spending a long time devising our own, it seemed sensible to run with the 'official' UN theme for 2015 of Make It happen where individual groups wanted to do so. (As a point of information, IWD pre-dates the UN by many decades. Its roots are pre-WW1 with official adoption in Soviet Russia in 1917 followed by other socialist and communist countries.)
The role of the Diversity team is to provide a very general framework, the opportunity for contributors and supporters to meet through a short series of taskforce meetings, and a shop window, We organise one, at most two, events ourselves alongside others in the calendar.
As a contributor you should aim to publicise your event through whatever have proved to be the best channels as well. If you can point people to the bigger picture (for example, https://www.southampton.ac.uk/iww ) so much the better!
