The Doctoral College is hosting an inaugural Festival of Doctoral Research in May this year.

Running from Thursday 12 – Friday 27 May 2016, the Festival will celebrate and showcase postgraduate research (PGR) and bring together the PGR community.

The Festival, which is the first of its kind to be held at the University, will host a robust timetable of both academic and social events, aimed particularly at PGRs, but with the wider University and external communities also in mind.

Focusing on five key themes, festival events are based around:

  • showcasing research
  • public engagement
  • collaborative workings
  • enhancing the PGR experience
  • celebrating achievement

The 3 Minute Thesis Grand Final will open the Festival on 12 May, with special Festival editions of the Researchers’ Café and Bright Club, plus the highly-anticipated Pint of Science week, running over the following two weeks.

A guest lecture, multiple research displays, a photo competition, panel discussions, interactive workshops and an award ceremony are just some of the events planned within the Festival period.

Jo James, Doctoral College Professional Development Manager – jmj@soton.ac.uk, is leading the Festival organisation with support from a working group drawn from PGRs and Students’ Union, academic and professional service staff.
