Charlie and Annabel went head-to-head in the Health Sciences 3MT faculty final

Last Wednesday, Health Sciences produced one of the most tightly-contested Three Minute Thesis faculty finals of the year.

With only one point in it, Charlotte (Charlie) Dando was crowned as the Health Sciences winner and will now go on to represent the faculty in the University’s Three Minute Thesis Grand Final in May.

Charlie delivered an informative and engaging presentation titled ‘Forefoot Neuroma: a pain between the toes’.

Coming a close second was Annabel Rule, who also presented a well-crafted talk titled: ‘The decision to go home from hospital – exploring how discharge decisions are made for older people after a short hospital stay’.

Associate Professor Ruth Bartlett led the proceedings and commended both Charlie and Annabel on their excellent efforts and their bravery in putting themselves forward.

Charlie was shocked to have won her faculty’s final and is looking forward to the next stage of the competition. Discussing why she thought it is good to take part, particularly for those in the health sciences sector, Charlie said:

“I saw it [3MT] as an opportunity for skills development as a Clinical Academic Researcher. I work regularly with patients and being able to give a clear explanation and translate information for them in a non-threatening way is really important. I saw Three Minute Thesis as a good platform to practice that.”

The contestants who competed for Health Sciences were:

  • Charlotte Dando
  • Annabel Rule

The next, and last, of the 3MT faculty finals to take place is:

Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences Final - Thursday 31 March 2016 at 2.30pm, 54/4011 L/T 4A

The 3MT Grand Final takes place on 12 May and makes up part of the Festival of Doctoral Research.
