Managing your Supervisors

This course provides a brief guide to the formal aspects of the supervisor-student relationship, and the roles and responsibilities of the academic unit, the supervisors and the student, as laid out in the University's Code of Practice for Doctoral Supervision.

Course Description

However, arguably more importantly and certainly more interestingly, it provides insight into the complex relationship between a doctoral student and his/her supervisors, and how this evolves over time. You will be given hints and tips for managing this relationship (often humorously compared with a marriage!) and survival strategies for coping with any challenges that arise. Learning is mainly through the use of semi-fictional 'case histories' which are all based on real students' experiences, but you will also get the chance to raise any concerns you may have, either anonymously or as part of a class discussion.
