Booking and recording training

For most courses within our Programme, you should sign up via Gradbook, using your University id and password - you will find a link from each course description. For step-by-step support, please consult the Guide to Gradbook.

Before booking on to a course, please check the course description carefully to ensure the course is intended for you and will meet your needs. Click the course title from within the Gradbook listings - this will take you to the course web page.

Please note that sessions will be added to Gradbook on a rolling basis through the year - you can normally see all sessions scheduled within a four month period.  However, the course description on this website will show all the dates planned for the current academic year - you will need to check Gradbook in due course to book on the later dates.

Once you have made a course booking, you will receive an immediate email confirmation with all necessary instructions and information, and an automated reminder email later on.

If you experience any technical or other difficulties while using Gradbook, please email or phone 023 8059 3253 and we will be pleased to help you resolve these.

Attendance and your training record

Please be aware that, by booking a place on any course, you are making a commitment to attend the session for its full duration, including arriving promptly for the advertised start-time.  The course tutor has the right to turn away late-arrivals on the day.  Because some courses are in high demand, the Doctoral College reserves the right to withdraw a researcher's access to the Programme in response to repeated non-attendance.

Cancellation policy

Please treat all course bookings in a professional manner, unbooking yourself (via Gradbook) with plenty of notice where necessary, or providing a timely explanation for absence (by email to on the rare occasion that this might be necessary - ie an unavoidable emergency which prevents your attendance.

All course attendances are recorded in the Gradbook database and uploaded automatically to PGR Tracker.  The attendance data will be viewable three days after the session date. Please consult the Guide to Gradbook for details on how to check your course bookings and attendances, or print a summary.

Course ratings

Once you have attended a session, you will be asked to give a rating to that particular course – this will happen automatically when you next login to Gradbook. Your rating will be added to those of other attendees over time, and an average star-rating will appear against the course heading on the Gradbook listings. We hope this will be helpful to everyone considering booking on a course. (But please note that we also routinely collect more detailed qualitative and quantitative feedback from attendees at the end of our sessions in order to evaluate their effectiveness.)

Lunch and refreshments

Unless specifically stated in the workshop description or pre-workshop email, lunch is NOT provided. In some cases however, workshops will include light refreshments.

Training venues

Your booking confirmation will include the location and room where the course is taking place.  Many of our courses take place at Highfield Campus in a variety of locations, please check the details in your booking confirmation carefully before you set out to attend a course.

NB. If your course is taking place in Level 3 of Building 27, there is currently no step free access i.e. no lift.  Please inform us as soon as possible on +44(0)23 8059 3253 (internal: 23253) if you require accessible training rooms/facilities.
