Introduction to Learning and Teaching for Researchers (ILTeR)

ILTeR is a version of module 1 of the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP), designed especially for doctoral researchers.  If you completed Parts 1 & 2 of Introduction to Teaching Skills for Postgraduates (ITSPG 1 & 2) in 2017 or earlier, you are eligible to apply for ILTeR.

The 10 ECTS (20 CATS) module supports the development of skills appropriate for doctoral researchers involved in teaching and leads to recognition as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). ILTeR fulfils the pre-requisite requirements for PGCAP Module 2; successful completion of ILTeR will allow participants to move into PGCAP Module 2 when appropriate.

ILTeR covers the basics of learning & teaching delivery, including marking, which those new to teaching in HE will find useful. You will be required to attend six 3-hour sessions as follows:

Training Sessions
Session 1 Learning and teaching in Higher Education
Session 2 Design 1: Learning outcomes and constructive alignment
Session 3 Design 2: Session design, learning and teaching activities.
Session 4 Introduction to assessment practice and technology enhanced learning.
Session 5 Evaluation, reflective practice and enhancement.
Session 6 Diversity and internationalisation.

You will be required to complete four assignments:

1 Peer observation and reflection (2000 words).
2 Technology-enhanced learning blog and feedback contributions (1000 words).
3 Teaching diverse students annotated bibliography (1000 words).
4 Map of activities against the UKPSF (required but not credit bearing).
For assignment 1, participants are required to be observed by an experienced educator, to observe an experienced educator, and to observe and be observed by an ILTeR colleague. The observations don’t have to be lectures but should reflect the scope of teaching with which you are involved.

Before applying to attend ILTeR, you should ensure that you will have sufficient teaching opportunities to be able to develop and refine your skills and to complete the required observations. We ask you to try and arrange teaching activities during the period within which you are attending the ILTeR sessions.

Application process and session dates

The next instance of the ILTeR programme begins on Tuesday 6th November 2018, with subsequent training days on Monday 12th November and Monday 19th November 2018. You MUST be able to attend all three days.

Entry to the programme is by application (please email S.Furr@soton.ac.uk to request an application form)

The deadline for submission of application forms is Sunday 28th October 2018.

Please be aware that applying for a place on the ILTeR programme does not automatically guarantee you a place. All the applications will be assessed and all candidates will be notified by email after 29th October 2018.
