Quality, Monitoring and Enhancement

Our Quality, Monitoring and Enhancement (QME) framework sets out the fundamental standards that underpin our activities and ensure we meet higher education sector requirements.

Meeting sector quality standards

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) is the independent body entrusted with monitoring and advising on standards and quality in UK higher education institutions. Our QME framework and University Regulations have been designed to enable us to meet the expectations set out in the QAA’s UK Quality Code for Higher Education.

Quality, Monitoring and Enhancement

The University’s QME framework for postgraduate research students is detailed in the Quality Handbook.

Regulations for Research Degrees and Higher Doctorates and the Code of Practice for Research Degree Candidature and Supervision

The University’s requirements for all research degrees are covered by the Regulations for Research Degrees and Higher Doctorates (also referred to as the 'Calendar') and the Code of Practice for Research Degree Candidature and Supervision (also referred to as the ‘Code’).

The Code sets out University-level policy and guidelines for candidature and is intended to amplify and complement the Regulations for Research Degrees and Higher Doctorates and to provide a framework for all supervisory relationships.

Changes to the Research Degree Regulations

With effect from 1st August 2017, the University has made some changes to the regulations governing Research Degrees.  These changes are the result of the University’s continuous review of its programme, services, and facilities to ensure quality enhancement.

The changes were made to simplify where possible, provide clarification, and increase transparency in some areas of the University’s procedures.  The recommendations were made to the University Senate via specific working groups of the Postgraduate Research Quality, Monitoring, and Enhancement Subcommittee, a subcommittee of the Academic Quality and Standards Committee, all of which have student representation.

The key changes are listed below and summarised in the document below:
