Project title: Ocean circulation and the Southern Ocean carbon sink
It is thanks to the Black Futures scheme that I have this amazing opportunity to research something I am genuinely interested in, so if you're considering applying to the scheme, go for it!
My name is Liliana, and I’m a first-year PhD Ocean & Earth Sciences student. I graduated with a Geophysics MSci from Imperial College London in 2021 and subsequently worked as a geospatial data scientist before starting my PhD.
My PhD is about studying how ocean circulation interacts with the remineralisation of sinking organic matter in the Southern Ocean, using biogeochemical data and ocean models.
I chose this project because the ocean is fundamental in mitigating climate change by absorbing heat and carbon, and a better understanding of it is required to better predict future changes and consequences to our world due to climate change. The Southern Ocean is particularly key to study as it is a significant carbon sink.
