Our Black Futures scholars are talented Black and mixed-Black heritage researchers who are pursuing a PhD at Southampton. Check out their stories to learn more about their research topics and how they got into academia.

Black Futures cohort 2023

Amanda Hind

Amanda is investigating the experiences of Black and Black mixed-heritage women and girls who are late diagnosed as autistic.

Leon Campbell

Leon is exploring how UK healthcare can best utilise mind-body exercise as an intervention for people with long-term conditions from underserved communities.

Nadera Assim

Nadera is researching foot health in refugees and asylum seekers. She talks about starting a PhD as a mature student.

Liliana Aranos

Liliana is studying ocean circulation and the Southern Ocean carbon sink. A better understanding can help better predict future changes to our world due to climate change.

Linda Amungwa

Lilian's PhD looks at health inequalities among deprived and ethnic minority communities. She is conducting her research with the people who are most affected.

Ruweyda has set up the infrastructure necessary to tackle antibiotic resistance - a significant threat to global health and safety.

Meet our Black Futures tutors

Our Black Futures tutors provide additional tailored support for our Black Futures scholars. Students on this scholarship scheme are paired with an independent tutor beyond their supervisory team, and this tutor will offer further pastoral support during their time at Southampton.
