Special Considerations

Special Considerations

PGR Special Considerations should now be submitted online via PGR Manager. Guidance on how to complete a Special Considerations request can be found here.

Students who commenced their studies prior to 01 August 2016 and who are not using the PGR Manager system should continue to submit their special consideration using the form below to the Faculty Graduate School Office.


Situations that are outside of your control that you could not reasonably have foreseen and that have (or may in the future have) a negative effect are defined as extenuating circumstances.  A negative effect includes:

The Regulations Governing Special Considerations and Suspension of Candidature for Postgraduate Research Students sets out a non-exhaustive list of the situations that generally meet the definition of extenuating circumstances. In accordance with these Regulations, you may request:

The SC1 – Special Consideration Request Form should be used for requests for special consideration that are related to extenuating circumstances.

The Regulations also cover requests for a period of suspension of candidature that are unrelated to extenuating circumstances (e.g. attendance at a fixed-term work placement that supports the research degree; parental leave; employment commitments (where an employer requires more time than usual to be dedicated to employment.  The SC2 – Suspension of Candidature Request Form should be used for such requests.
All requests should be submitted to your Faculty Graduate School Office as soon as circumstances are known to you but normally not more than five working days after any assessment or deadline may be affected. Only in exceptional circumstances, and only where there are compelling reasons why the request was not made in accordance with these requirements, will a request be reviewed.

Applications should be submitted using the Special Considerations Form (below) and submitted via the student’s Faculty Graduate School Office.
