All Faculties at Southampton must provide students with access to a core set of training which is outlined in Your Doctorate in the Handbook. The core training will be delivered by Faculties in a variety of ways, as outlined below.
In addition, all new doctoral researchers must complete the following mandated training. Failure to complete successfully the mandated training below is a failure to meet the progression requirements and so will result in a failure to progress.
Postgraduate researchers commencing their studies in 2021/22 must complete the following by the time they undertake their Academic Needs Analysis:

Online training on data management will be provided by the Library and should be completed by all doctoral researchers commencing their studies in 2021/22 by the time of their first formal progression review.
Using each PhD student’s project description as a starting point, this course will be an opportunity for students to assess, synthesize and present the key literature and scientific challenges of their chosen research topics.
Their supervisors will provide guidance and direct students towards an introductory literature but students are expected to delve much more widely and deeply into the published literature. The students will present their research in a series of short conference style oral presentations and write up their investigations in the format of a high impact journal article (e.g., Science / Nature). Guidance for the presentation and write up will be provided at the introductory meeting led by the source course conveners.
Sea Survival training is provided once a year, usually in October. Information will be sent out nearer the date of training.
