Hi, I'm Ignacio Willats and I studied BSc Economics within Social Sciences: Economics at the University of Southampton.

With the help from the university's Take Off fund I am now building a software company. It's an exciting prospect for me as I have always aspired to start my own venture.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies in Social Sciences at the University of Southampton?

I was attracted to the University of Southampton because of the strong links with industry, research and importantly the support the university gives to student run enterprises. Social Sciences at Southampton has a strong reputation for research and the career opportunities made available to you along the way. I was fortunate enough to be able to partake in an exchange programme to Hong Kong in my final year. The experience was incredible and allowed me to explore parts of the world as a student.

Q: What did you enjoy about studying Economics at Southampton?

Economics at Southampton provides you with a wide set of practical and analytical skills that I have often found myself applying to real life situations. You are given the opportunity to take a number of different modules outside of your course, which allows you to discover your strengths and interests.

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

While studying I have been able to travel to new countries a a result of being here. The university also helped fund two businesses (sotonight & unitu) which I started in my final year. The entreprenuerial community at the university is great and the strong techinical enrollment facilitates some amazing collaboration between the enterprising students and the talented technical students.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

With the help from the university's take off fund I am now building a software company. It's an exciting prospect for me as I have always aspired to start my own venture. To be able to do it so early on is an amazing opportunity. Who knows you might even see unitu being used here next year!

I also hope to keep traveling. The exchange really awoke the travel bug within me. It's an experience which I have learned a lot from as well as making friends from across the world. I will continue to keep in touch with the great friends and connections I have made while at Southampton.
