Hi, I'm Minh Nguyen and I studied BSc Mathematics and Economics within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

What I loved about studying Maths at Southampton is that, through its very well-organised lectures and clear delivery of knowledge, I was able to develop my critical thinking and problem solving skills tremendously

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies at the University of Southampton?

The University of Southampton is one of the leading research universities, especially in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering and Social Sciences, and consistently ranks among the top 15 universities in the UK.

I was very interested in the wide range of majors and module options that Mathematics at the University of Southampton offers. Moreover, the University provides excellent support for students in academic studies (personal tutor, module tutors, and lecturers are very supportive and easily approached), as well as in daily matters such as health care, counselling services, and career services. Furthermore, Southampton is a warm southern city with very friendly local people, an ideal place for foreign students to come and study.

Q: What did you enjoy about studying Maths at Southampton?

What I loved about studying Maths at Southampton is that, through its very well-organised lectures and clear delivery of knowledge, I was able to develop my critical thinking and problem solving skills tremendously. I took the courses in Mathematics and Economics, and I find that studying Mathematics provides an excellent background for studying Economics, and Social Sciences in general. Professors at the School of Maths are very easily approached if I have questions, and I really appreciated that.

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

At the end of my studies, I graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Mathematics and Economics with the highest average grade in the cohort, and was chosen to be one among two students to receive a Prize and Associate Status from the UK Institute of Mathematics and its applications. I feel really privileged and very humble to receive such encouraging results. I would like to sincerely thank the Professors at the School of Mathematics and the Department of Economics, who have taught and guided me over the 3 years of undergraduate studies. Without them, I would not have been able to complete my degree successfully. I also really appreciate their continuing help and advice with my current and future studies.

Q: What do you think of the social aspects of life at Southampton?

The University provides an excellent opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities and work experience. During my studies in Southampton, I participated in Student Ambassadors Scheme and Student Helper on Open Days, Arrival Weeks and Campus Visit Tours, and acquired a great deal in terms of interpersonal skills and communication skills in English. I also joined the Friends International club, Yoga and Tai chi classes, Aerobics and gym classes, where I met many friends with diverse backgrounds and interests. Furthermore, I also took part in some activities of student-run societies and organisations such as the Union Films, AIESEC Southampton, and academic societies when I had free time. All in all, Southampton University provides an unlimited opportunity for students with diverse interests and personalities to gain a wide range of experience, and one can always find amazing things to do in Southampton University to suit his/her background, interest and future goal.
