Hi, I'm Tom Scowsill and I studied BSc Economics within Social Sciences: Economics at the University of Southampton.

I have managed to secure a five year graduate training contract with PwC to qualify as a Chartered Accountant and Management Consultant. Southampton’s reputation and strong links with employers certainly helped me to secure this in the extremely competitive graduate job market.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies in Economics at the University of Southampton?

The Economics department at Southampton (a leading Russell group university) had consistently ranked highly in university league tables. However, the department also offered unrivalled international exchanges for its undergraduate students. The opportunity to complete my bachelors degree in three years with a semester abroad was a deciding factor.

Q: What do you enjoy about studying Economics at Southampton?

Every semester, students are given the opportunity to study a module from another discipline offered by the university. Throughout my degree I took modules offered by the school of Management and Law, as well as in Finance, Computer Science and Global Health. Studying subjects beyond the confines of Economics enabled me to explore other interests, meet new people and develop a broader skill set.

A real highlight of choosing Southampton was my exchange that took me to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States. Exceptionally well organised and funded, I am forever grateful to the University of Southampton for awarding me this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

Studying Economics at Southampton really broadened my understanding of the world of economics, finance and business. Through the university’s entrepreneurship society “Fish On Toast” I have made some exceptionally intelligent and exciting friends and contacts for the future who are starting up their own businesses post-graduation.

Personally, I have managed to secure a five year graduate training contract with PwC to qualify as a Chartered Accountant and Management Consultant. Southampton’s reputation and strong links with employers certainly helped me to secure this in the extremely competitive graduate job market.

Q: Do you have any other comments?

I also thoroughly enjoyed being on the committee and a member of SUMHC (Southampton University Men’s Hockey Club). As well as representing the university against other Southern universities and Hampshire teams, the club became a defining part of my university experience as I made so many friends that I will remain in touch with in the future.
