PhD Economics

Economics at Southampton has been awarded Doctoral Training Status by the ESRC. Full funding is available for strong applicants wishing to undertake frontier research.

All research students are registered for a PhD, and progress is conditional on successful completion of compulsory training and satisfactory progress in research, assessed through an annual review.

The third year of study is devoted to full-time research and preparation of your doctoral thesis. Research students in their final year are expected to participate fully in our programme of research workshops and seminars. This includes a formal presentation of a completed research paper in our programme of research seminars. The formal duration of the programme is three years, and the maximum allowable duration of candidacy is 48 months.

To apply, please complete the online application form.

The entry requirement for research students for the PhD is a Master’s degree in economics or econometrics or an equivalent qualification. Students without a master’s-level qualification may wish to consider studying one of our master’s programmes or our integrated PhD programme if their previous training and experience are unsuitable.

PhD proposal
If you are applying for a PhD degree, please enclose a short statement (1,000–2,000 words) describing your proposed area of research. This helps us ensure that your research interests match with those of a member of our Division. Before you submit your application, you may find it useful to discuss your proposal with a member of staff with research expertise in your area.
