Dr Athina Thoma is a Lecturer in Mathematics Education within Southampton Education School at the University of Southampton.
Athina’s research is focused on mathematics education at university level.
Her current research interests include the impact of programming on mathematics undergraduate students’ learning, and students’ transition between secondary and university mathematics.
Before joining the Southampton Education School, Athina worked as a researcher at Imperial College of London (Teaching proof to undergraduate students with Lean. Pedagogy Transformation - Imperial College Learning and Teaching strategy) and University of East Anglia (MathTASK and CAPTeaM). She also worked as a Learning Enhancement Tutor of Mathematics and Statistics and an Associate Tutor in undergraduate and postgraduate modules at the University of East Anglia.
Athina’s research methods are mostly qualitative, using discourse analysis and thematic analysis.
