Mrs Caro Garrett is a Principal Teaching Fellow within Southampton Education School at the University of Southampton.

Caro graduated from Durham University with a B.Sc. in Applied Physics and Electronics and then worked for several years at GEC Hirst Research Centre in the Optical Techniques Group, principally using electron microscopes as analytical instruments. Becoming a little bored with repetitive analyses, she chose the teaching route, studying for a PGCE at the University of Southampton.

She taught science, principally physics and chemistry at a secondary school in Salisbury, then, after a career break, returned to Southampton, where she taught physics and chemistry in several secondary schools and a local sixth form college. While working in the post-compulsory sector, she trained as a Subject Learning Coach on the first cohort of a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course run by the Standards Unit for the sector. She was the NQT mentor in college, which involved mentoring and coaching the newly qualified teachers, and also managing the PGCE students in college.

Caro joined the Southampton Education School in January 2008 as a Senior Teaching Fellow with the specific task of developing and delivering the PGCE secondary science Subject Knowledge Enhancement course focusing on physics subject knowledge. She has been involved in researching the effectiveness of physics professional development programmes and attitudes of physics teacher trainees to their course choices.

Caro has held the posts of Secondary PGCE Programme Director and lead tutor of the secondary science PGCE programme. She now works part time and as the chemistry tutor on the science PGCE. She is a past chair of the Association for Tutors in Science Education , and was on the Editorial Board of Physics Education.
