Dr Gary Kinchin is Research Training Program Coordinator within Southampton Education School at the University of Southampton.

Gary trained as a physical education specialist at St Mark and St John College, graduating with First Class Honours. He taught in Croydon for five years as Head of Boy’s Physical Education. In 1993 Gary enrolled as a ‘Graduate Teaching Assistant’ within the Health, Physical Education and Recreation department at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Gary received his MA and PhD in ‘Physical Education Teacher Education’ from Ohio State. His doctoral thesis focussed upon the introduction of an innovative curriculum [Cultural Studies Curriculum in Physical Activity and Sport] within one inner-city Alternative High School and this research served as the platform for his specific scholarly interest in ‘Sport Education ’, which was inspired by the work of and supervision from Mary O’Sullivan, Daryl Siedentop and Deborah Tannehill. Further academic positions have included Assistant Professor in Physical Education Teacher Education at Illinois State University and Senior Lecturer in Sport Pedagogy at De Montfort University, Bedford. Additional interests lies within teacher professional development, teacher education and the applications of social media to teacher preparation. Gary joined the University of Southampton in 2001 and to date has served at Programme Leader for Physical Education, Programme Director for PGCE (Secondary), Programme Leader for the MA in Institutional Management and Leadership , Deputy Head of School (Education) and Coordinator of the Research Training Programme. Gary has published numerous papers on Sport Education in both academic and professional journals, has presented at domestic and international conferences as was a co-editor of the first text published on Sport Education and the National Curriculum for England and Wales. His current teaching responsibilities include BSc Education, PGCE Secondary, Master’s, and he supervises a number of doctoral students. Recent PhD students have tackled topics including; ‘Cooperative Learning in Saudi Arabia’, ‘Developing CPD for New Teachers in Saudi Arabia’, ‘Undergraduate Expectations for the Study of Sport’ and the ‘Application of Applied Behaviour Analysis to Sport Coaching’.
