Dr Neta Shaby BSc, MA, PhD

Dr Neta Shaby is a Lecturer in Science Education within the Southampton Education School and a member of the MSHE (Mathematics, Science and Health Education) research group.

Neta's research focuses on Informal Science Learning Environments. She Holds a BSc in Life Science, MA and PhD in Science Education, exploring interactions in science museums. She was a Postdoctoral Scholar at Oregon State University as part of a longitudinal research project aims to strengthen the STEM learning ecosystem for middle-school-aged youth and their families.

Before joining the Southampton Education School, Neta was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, exploring family learning across settings and time, following families, from different socio-economic statues, while engaging in various informal activities at home, at the beach, while visiting the zoo, during out-door picnic etc.

Neta's research methods are mostly qualitative, employing discourse analysis and interactions multi-modal analysis. In addition, she uses psychophysiological equipment, including EDA (Electro-Dermal Activity) sensors, to examine the role of emotions in family learning.

Neta also obtained a teaching certificate and worked as an informal science instructor and pedagogical content developer for 12 years in various informal institutions such as the "Technoda" Science and Technology Center, “Clore Garden of Science” and the "Active Science" program for at-risk youth.
