Hi, I'm Lois Sellwood and I studied MSc Education within Southampton Education School at the University of Southampton.

My tutor was absolutely fantastic and had excellent up-to-date knowledge and experience. My lectures were well planned and perfectly matched to my needs as a specialist teacher.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies in Education at the University of Southampton?

Having completed a BA and PGCE at other institutions, I had been teaching for 3 years when I decided to apply for my MSc. I researched all of the opportunities for my specialism and Southampton was not only local but also held a fantastic reputation. I spoke with colleagues and contacts within my field and they all agreed that Southampton was by far the best option for me to pursue my academic studies.

Q: What did you enjoy about studying Education at Southampton?

I love the campus and the ethos of the University suits me perfectly. I always felt that I was working as part of a far wider team of people and although a student, I always felt that my professional background was respected. My tutor was absolutely fantastic and had excellent up-to-date knowledge and experience. My lectures were well planned and perfectly matched to my needs as a specialist teacher.

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

I have not only achieved my overall academic qualification, but also gained two separate professional accreditations that directly meet the needs of my teaching role. I have developed a huge amount of specialist skills and have therefore progressed in my workplace and been promoted. On a personal note, I have also been able to submit academic works for presentation at national and regional forums; building my confidence and experience as well as my professional reputation.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

I continue to work in the Further Education sector and am deeply committed to continuing my personal and professional development in my specialist field. I am an advocate for both young people and adults in the local community and aim to support the work of others across the south-west in order to bring about changes in the specialist education sector. I have considered a PhD...but as yet I am undecided!
