CPD activities: training professional teachers in the British Army

The School of Education has worked with the British Army since 2003, offering a tailored postgraduate certificate in education programme to their professional trainers.

The PGCE (Prof Dev) is unique in that is it specifically aimed at teachers in the professional sector. The school developed the programme into a master's degree in education, an MSc, that has won national awards for its innovative and flexible approach.

Both the postgraduate certificate and master's involve residential modules on our campus and a work-based research project.

Our school has revised both programmes, the PGCE (Prof Dev) and the MSc to meet the changing needs of the Army's Educational and Training Services and are integral to the professional and career development of the branch.

CPD activities: supporting science teachers and technicians

The School of Education has provided continuing professional development for science teachers, technicians and local authority officers in Southampton for over 10 years. Our Learning Suite hosts a programme of low-cost, high impact training through CLEAPSS, the Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Equipment.

Our courses are chosen by professionals coming from all around the south coast of England and provide certificates to successful participants.

CLEAPSS resources give teachers ideas for engaging practical activities designed to fire pupils' imaginations We show teachers and technicians how to translate these ideas into safe and exciting experiences in the classroom. CLEAPSS advice and documentation is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive and the Department for Education.
