State of the Art in Educational Effectiveness

Published: 14 February 2011

Two new Chairs at the School of Education, Professor David Reynolds and Professor Daniel Muijs, were co-presenters at a keynote session entitled "The State of the Art in Educational Effectiveness and Improvement Research" at the 24th annual International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI) held in Cyprus.

Prior to the conference Profs Reynolds and Muijs, together with Prof David Hopkins (Institute of Education, London), had coordinated teams of leading international researchers in the fields of Educational Effectiveness, Teacher Effectiveness and Educational Leadership with a view to distilling the findings of research conducted over recent decades, to raise the profile of contemporary challenges being faced by researchers and to consider how recent methodological developments are shedding fresh light on key issues within each field.

The presentations and accompanying Q&A session were eagerly received by conference delegates, a mixed audience of researchers, policy makers and practitioners drawn from over 50 different nations, and there are plans to develop the contributions to each strand of the 'State of the Art' session into a special edition of the international journal School Effectiveness and School Improvement. The 'State of the Art' session looks set to be a regular feature at future ICSEI conferences which demonstrates a desire for high quality research to remain central to the aims and intentions of the congress.

At the AGM held during the conference Prof Muijs was elected to join the Board of ICSEI and Chris Downey, also from the School of Education, was co-opted to the ICSEI Board as its Postgraduate Research Student Representative.
