PhD studentship in Higher Education Progress and Achievement

Published: 7 September 2012

The Higher Education Progress & Achievement Data (HEPAD) group at the University of Southampton is pleased to open applications for a full-time PhD studentship in the field of Higher Education Progress & Achievement.

This is an exciting opportunity to undertake interdisciplinary postgraduate research in a key area of Higher Education policy and practice; namely, to conduct a longitudinal study of the performance and experience of students - particularly those from non-traditional backgrounds - in a Russell Group University. It is envisaged that the candidate will undertake mixed methods research in this area, utilising both existing university datasets and purposively collected data.

We are particularly keen to receive applications from candidates with:

  • Experience in the use of quantitative analysis methods, and the analysis and aggregation of large-scale datasets
  • Knowledge and understanding of educational processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of the UK Higher Education system

The successful candidate will work as part of the newly constituted HEPAD group, a university-wide interdisciplinary initiative hosted at Southampton Education School, and will be engaged in supporting the work of the centre alongside her/his doctoral study. The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof Daniel Muijs and Prof Tony Kelly, but will be expected to engage with a range of staff from across the university. The studentship will start from 1 October 2012 and last for three years, and will include full student fees plus a subsistence grant of £17,000 per annum.

Eligibility Criteria

The studentship is available for UK, EU and overseas students holding a good honours degree at first or upper second class level from a UK university, or equivalent from a non-UK university, as well as a good Masters qualification (or equivalent) from a UK or recognised non-UK university.

How to apply

Applicants should apply by 20 September 2012 to PGRapply.FSHS@southampton.ac.uk using the University of Southampton Postgraduate Application Form, which should be marked ‘HEPAD Studentship’. Applicants should indicate how their expertise / experience makes them suited to the post.
