Prof Lianghuo Fan interviewed by Singapore's newspaper Today
Prof Lianghuo Fan, Head of the Mathematics and Science Education (MaSE) research centre, gave an interview to Singapore's newspaper TODAY about Singapore mathematics education.
Prof Fan's interview focused on the differences in Asian and British students' attitudes towards maths. The interview was published under the title ‘Some pressure ‘not necessarily a bad thing''. Prof Fan told TODAY that the Republic's mathematics education is "undoubtedly among the best in the world ... but there are still many areas for further improvement" - including his observation that Singapore students' written communication skills to explain maths solutions are "quite weak". Comparing the pressure that Singapore students have to British students, Prof Fan stated that "having some pressure is not necessarily a bad thing - many UK students probably don't have enough pressure in maths - but having too much pressure definitely is."
