Like fire and ice? What research tells us about collaboration, competition and school effectiveness.

When looking at school effectiveness and the structuring of the education system, one of the key questions has long been whether to encourage competition between schools or get them to collaborate in order to drive up standards. Policy has at times stressed both simultaneously, as is presently the case with the emphasis both on supply-side measures and the encouragement of Federations of schools. However, in ideological terms the two are often seen as contradictory.

In this presentation we will present recent data on the impact of both competition and collaboration on school effectiveness. We will explore the most effective forms of both, and discuss the relationship between the two, again using recent quantitative and qualitative findings. We will pointy to key lessons for school effectiveness theory, policy and practise.

Professor Daniel Muijs, is Chair of Education. Previously he worked at the University of Manchester as Chair of Pedagogy and Teacher Development at the University of Manchester, School of Education, as Chair of School Leadership and Management at the University of Newcastle and as senior at Warwick Institute of Education. He is an acknowledged expert in the field of Educational and Teacher Effectiveness and is co-editor of the journal ‘School Effectiveness and School Improvement’. He has published widely in the areas of educational effectiveness, leadership and research methods, and has conducted research for government agencies (DCSF, NCSL, QCA), Charitable Trusts (Gatsby) and Research Councils (ESRC).
