About the course
This course is aimed at teachers and science coordinators and consists of three face-to-face sessions interspersed with two periods of classroom based science inquiry work. The course will help you implement inquiry based science in your classroom and/or school. The course will stimulate your thinking about inquiry based primary science education and help you acquire strategies to design and deliver inquiry based science activities, taking into consideration assessment and building in progression across the primary ages. A range of inquiry based activities will be explored, and you will have an opportunity to try these in your own classroom and develop them further, focusing on your own needs in inquiry based science teaching, and with guidance and feedback from the course tutors and fellow course participants. We will also have a look at the new National Curriculum and its impact on areas such as assessment in science inquiry.
Outcomes
- Reflect on what inquiry based science education is, what challenges it poses for you and your school and how these might be overcome
- Reflect on your own/your school’s inquiry based science education practice and needs, and address any identified areas for development
- Evaluate, design and implement inquiry based science activities for your own class/school
- Develop and implement ideas for inquiry based science in particular areas of science such as outdoor education or specific subject content for your class and/or the whole school
- Build in assessment and progression into inquiry based science activities and reflect on the role and place these have in inquiry based science education
Each face-to-face session runs from 1.00pm to 4.30pm and starts with a complimentary buffet lunch.
There will also be two periods of classroom based science inquiry work, which together with the face-to-face sessions total 20 hours.
These sessions are free to attend (for teachers from both state and independent schools), but you must attend all sessions.
