This free to attend half-day conference for mentors is designed to strengthen the partnership between the University and the schools involved with PGCE programmes, whilst providing a CPD opportunity for its delegates.

WHO CAN ATTEND?
Anyone with an interest in mentoring. The conference is for experienced mentors, new mentors and teachers considering becoming a mentor from both the primary and secondary phases. Headteachers and other senior leaders with an interest in mentoring and working in partnership with the university are also welcome.

2.00 – 2.20 Keynote address
2.25 – 3.25 Session 1
3.25 – 3.55 Afternoon tea
4.00 – 5.00 Session 2
5.00 – 5.40 Optional plenaries

THE SESSIONS
Each of the following sessions will be run separately for primary school mentors and secondary school mentors, with the exception of Session B. Delegates are asked to select two sessions they wish to attend from sessions A to D. Delegates may also wish to attend one of the optional plenaries, session E or session F.

SESSION A
Managing difficult conversations & developing positive feedback
This session will explore ideas and strategies that can be successfully used in these situations. Delegates will have the opportunity to draw on examples from their own experience in order to develop their confidence in addressing sensitive issues.

SESSION B
Choosing a mentor – what skills to look for
This session will explore the qualities and skills that make a good mentor in order to help inform mentor selection and development.

SESSION C
Working with your University tutor
What is the most effective way that you can work with your tutor from the University? This session will be a opportunity for discussion about ways to develop your relationship with the University.

SESSION D
Raising the grade – moving from 3 to 2 and 1 to 1*
This session will explore ways of getting the best out of your trainee. What strategies can you use to support and enhance their school practice so they are challenged to achieve their potential?

SESSION E (OPTIONAL PLENARY)
Introduction to mentor certification: An introduce the training programme.
SESSION F (OPTIONAL PLENARY)
Working party – starting to write new units for the mentor training programme

COST TO ATTEND
There is no cost. Attendance is free although places are limited.
