Suitable for: teachers and teaching assistants moving into EYFS or KS1. This course will look at subject knowledge, progression and assessment of phonics. We will explore a range of different tasks to help children’s phonics development and consider how phonics needs to link to reading and the rest of the curriculum to ensure good progress. Dr Miranda Dodd, University of Southampton, will lead each session. Miranda has a wealth of teaching experience and is currently teaching on the Primary PGCE, focusing principally on Early Literacy (including Systematic Synthetic Phonics) and leads the Early Years Module on the BSc in Education Studies. She is interested in research and is a member of the National Teacher Research Panel.
Participants will be able to:
- Review their subject knowledge and understanding of progression and assessment in the teaching of phonics.
- Identify tasks to help children’s phonic development.
Consider the links between phonics, reading and other curriculum areas, ensuring children are making good progress.
