Event details

The UK Literacy Association (UKLA) run an award each year called ‘Our Class Loves This Book’, based on the shortlisted books for the previous year’s UKLA book awards. Further details of these awards can be found on https://ukla.org/awards/ukla-book-award. Join Miranda for Session One where you can explore the texts that were shortlisted in the 3-6 and 7-11 age categories and consider how you will introduce one or more of the texts and develop their use with the children. This will help you develop your knowledge of the best of recent children’s literature and how it could be used in the classroom. Suitable for: teachers and teaching assistants working in EYFS, KS1 or KS2.

‘Our Class Loves This Book’ promotes exploring a book from the list in depth with your class in a wide variety of ways. These sessions will support you in:

  • Exploring high quality recently published children’s literature.
  • Considering how to use it with your classes.
  • Sharing experiences with other teachers.

At the second session we will follow-up, share and celebrate the activities everyone has developed with their class. We hope people will be inspired by this to explore other new literature and even enter for the national award!
Dr Miranda Dodd, University of Southampton, will lead each session. Miranda has a wealth of teaching experience and teaches on the Primary PGCE, the BSc in Education Studies and Masters programmes. Her principle interests focus around developing children’s motivation, understanding and skills in all areas of English. Alongside this she is passionate about working with teachers to investigate and research best practice in a manageable and useful way. Session two, Monday 25th June 2018 – 13:30 – 16:00.

Course cost: £35 to attend both sessions to include light refreshments.
