Creative approaches to teaching grammar
Morning Session
We will explore how creative approaches to teaching grammar can be developed both in English lessons and across the curriculum. The emphasis will be upon enabling all pupils to deepen their responses to texts and their understanding of why authors utilise particular grammatical features, as well as helping to inform and develop the quality of their writing for a range of purposes.
Improving Reading Comprehension
Afternoon session
Making sense of texts lies at the heart of the teaching of reading in primary classrooms. This involves both deepening comprehension of the texts children encounter as well as engagement and enjoyment of reading. Comprehension depends on inference making. Readers cannot develop a literal understanding of text without inference. In this session David will draw on the co-authored book ‘Guiding Readers 7-11’ (Tennent, Reedy, Gamble and Hobsbaum 2016) and will touch on the research and evidence background, the key comprehension strategies which support inference making, as well as practical activities around short texts for participants to engage in and how these can be integrated into the ongoing reading curriculum.
